Purpose

The purpose of this Collaboration Café is to reflect on the nurse’s role in health assessment.

Course Outcomes

This Collaboration Café enables the student to meet the following course outcomes:

• CO 4: Demonstrate effective communication skills during health assessment and documentation. (PO 3)
• CO 6: Demonstrate caring and professional behaviour during patient interactions. (POs 6, 7)

SOLUTION:

Step 1:

Assessment is the basic block when analysing patient health status, and trying to develop a plan of care. Throughout nursing school, we were made to understand how important assessment is, and how it has to be handled. I work with a rehab unit and attend to patients with neurological conditions, such as stroke,  Parkinson’s disease, and others, and as a fairly new nurse, I am still learning about how patients needs are to be met. These and others are very important because it gives me an idea on the health status of my patient which sets me on a particular path for treatment.
