Purpose

Threaded discussions are interactive assignments that require current scholarly literature to support and validate the information presented. The purpose of the threaded discussion (TD) is to engage with the class instructor and peers to apply, analyze, synthesize, and evaluate course-related concepts and topics, to facilitate achievement of course learning outcomes. Participation in the TDs generates opportunities for students to actively engage in the written ideas of others by carefully reading, researching, reflecting, and responding to the contributions of their peers and course faculty. TDs foster the development of members into a community of learners as they share ideas and inquiries and integrate knowledge from other disciplines. Written interactions in the discussion show respect and sensitivity to peers’ gender, cultural and linguistic background, sexual orientation, and political and religious beliefs.

Each threaded discussion requires interaction with peers and/or the instructor, with active engagement in the TD on at least 2 separate days of the assigned week.

Conflict is common in healthcare settings. Common team sources of conflict include hierarchical relationships, authority differentials, poor communication, negative or disruptive behaviors, and multigenerational interprofessional teams.

  1. Describe a conflict you’ve encountered in your nursing practice. Identify the roles of the stakeholders involved. Do not identify the stakeholders by name.
  2. Analyze how the conflict was resolved. What conflict resolution style was used?
  3. Evaluate the efficacy of the resolution. Was the conflict resolution style used to address the conflict the most appropriate option? Why or why not?
  4. Identify and describe your preferred mode of conflict resolution.

During the start of my career in healthcare I worked on a unit that had a lot of staff that had been working for over 15+ years. Many these nurses were complacent in their roles and disconnected regarding the needs of others. One shift a new fellow new grad nurse requested the help of another more experienced nurse for a patient requiring manual peritoneal dialysis. Instead of helping, this nurse scolded the other nurse for their lack of experience. The senior nurse took over task not providing insight into how the other nurse could improve.
