Initial Post Instructions
For the initial post, respond to one of the following options, and label the beginning of your post indicating either Option 1 or Option 2:
- Option 1:What are the pros and cons of lobbyists as a tool for special interest groups? Should former members of Congress be allowed to become lobbyists? Explain your answer.
- Option 2:As we learn about social movements this week, reflect on post-pandemic social determinants of health: how can a healthcare professional become a change agent in the 21st century? Give examples of what this would look like. Describe if there are any federal or state regulations to consider.
Be sure to make connections between your ideas and conclusions and the research, concepts, terms, and theory we are discussing this week.

Greenberg and Page define lobbying as an “effort by an interest or advocacy group to influence the behavior of a public official” (2018, p. 170). Lobbyists often advocate on behalf of special interest groups to help enact change in the government. A benefit of lobbying includes the creation of a voice for those who may be overlooked. With the creation of the social movement’s voice, lobbyists can help the movement gain traction with the public, provide guidance on running the platform, and reach out to create change. Many lobbyists have developed relationships with policymakers. Relationships between lobbyists and lawmakers allow for a better understanding of the movement and its needs to be addressed. However, there are many positives to lobbying, and negatives are still present. Unfortunately, there may be a disproportionate influence on public policy due to the funding and resources of some special interest groups. Special interest groups have a clear goal in mind, this desire aligns with their opinions but will not always be agreed upon by all.
