Purpose

The purpose of this Discussion is to examine personal experiences with generational diversity and identify opportunities to apply inclusive practices.

Course Outcomes

This Discussion enables the student to meet the following course outcomes:

  • CO 1: Apply the concepts of equity, diversity, and inclusion to nursing practice, nursing roles, and continued development. (POs 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8)
  • CO 2: Identify challenges and barriers that affect the healthcare needs of marginalized populations. (POs 1, 3, 4, 7, 8)

Discussion: Apply Knowledge

Step 1: Consider an experience you have had with an age group different from your own.

Step 2: Answer the discussion prompts below with explanation and detail.

  • Paragraph one: Describe the experience. Was it a positive or negative experience?
  • Paragraph two: What did you learn from that encounter? Looking back, would you have done something or reacted differently? If so, how? What inclusive practices could you have utilized in this encounter?
  • Paragraph three: Discuss three meaningful similarities related to social justice issues between two generational age groups. Focus on meaningful, rather than trivial, similarities and not on the differences.
  • References: Provide complete references for all citations.

Paragraph one:

I was recently assigned to sit with a 15-year-old male patient on suicide watch, which was outside my comfort zone, being a Gen Xer and a NICU nurse. I was called in from an HCD (over-staffed shift), and after receiving a quick report and charting lesson from a nurse aide, I felt unsure about how to communicate with the patient, as I’m used to talking to babies. When I arrived, the young man was asleep, and his foster dad (also a Gen Xer) shared that he had just taken custody of the boy the day before, explaining the child’s depression and suicidal thoughts. We had a pleasant conversation before he left, and I continued my shift with the patient. Shortly after this, the patient suddenly woke up, sweating profusely. I introduced myself and asked if he was okay. He replied that he was fine but wanted to take a shower. I felt uncertain about handling the situation since I was required to monitor him at all times, including while he was in the bathroom and shower. I told him I needed his nurse to bring some fresh linens first. While we waited for the linens, I tried to engage him in conversation to ease the awkwardness.
