Childhood obesity is associated with a higher chance of premature onset of illnesses, including diabetes and cardiovascular diseases, and a greater risk of disability in adulthood. Obese children and adolescents are likely to suffer from breathing problems, increased risk of fractures, and hypertension. The economic impact of obesity is substantial and includes the direct costs of medical care and indirect costs such as lost productivity. A study by the World Obesity Federation predicts that by 2025, global costs related to obesity will reach $1.2 trillion annually (Linge et al., 2021). While high-income countries have historically reported higher rates of obesity, low- and middle-income countries are now witnessing a rapid rise in childhood obesity rates.
