Susie Walking Bear Yellowtail was among the first Native American registered nurse graduates. She belonged to the Crow people and made it her life work to advocate for the health of all Native Americans. Yellowtail was unfortunately orphaned at a young age and raised by non-Native American foster parents. Through her foster parents, she had the opportunity to go to school to become a registered nurse. Although taken off of the Crow people’s reservation, she never forgot her heritage. She later returned to the reservation, where she would begin to make an essential impact on all Native Americans, not just the Crow people. Under three different administrations, Yellowtail served on tribal, state, and federal Indian health and education councils. She was appointed to the U.S. Department of Health, Education, and Welfare’s Council on Indian Health and the President’s Council on Indian Education and Nutrition. Yellowtail’s story is inspiring; she lost her parents and was removed from the only culture she knew but never forgot. She used the nursing degree she was fortunate to obtain during that time to advocate for the health and well-being of her people. Her hard work and dedication allowed Native Americans to become registered nurses, allowing her culture to be represented in the nursing profession…………….KINDLY CLICK ON THE LINK BELOW TO ACCESS THE ENTIRE DOCUMENT FOR $12
