Discussion: Apply Knowledge
Step 1: Review the scenario below.
You are a preceptor training a nurse who is new to your floor. One client in your shift assignment has Sickle Cell Anemia and requires a complex regimen of oxygen, intravenous (IV) fluids, and pain medication to manage their illness. During interprofessional team rounds, the new nurse states, “I think this client is just seeking pain medication and they aren’t really in that much pain. We should stop giving them so much medication and consider discharge to make room for clients with real illnesses.”
The conversation stops and interprofessional team members are unsure what to say to address the new nurse’s statement. Everyone is upset by her statement, and they begin to argue. The attending physician tells everyone from the team to pause rounds and meet in the conference room in five minutes to resolve this conflict.
Your assigned perspective is based on the first letter of your last name in the chart below.

SOLUTION:
Within the interprofessional role of healthcare, constructive feedback plays an important role in resolving conflicts by providing honest and accurate feedback to colleagues. It opens mutual respect and allows for continuous improvement within the organizational culture. In our lecture, the internal team dynamics and external societal influences are constantly developing and shaping your organizational culture. Furthermore, in our healthcare organizations, communication can directly influence the culture (Grainger, 2022). Constructive feedback when given in a respectful way can clarify any misunderstandings a newer nurse may have and allows collaboration and solutions to occur thus leading to an increase in teamwork, trust and a positive environment/culture, which ultimately improves patient care.
Having a highly diverse staff can have a positive or negative on conflict resolution. Not all healthcare work environments have a healthy culture therefore creating a possible negative experience for a newer nurse. Experienced nurses who “eat their young” create an unprofessional environment, lowers staff morale and fosters a negative experience for the new nurse who might feel that they are being bullied. Constructive feedback should be used as a confidence builder and requires emotional intelligence from a well-respected and experienced colleague who has good intentions (Grainger, 2022). The giver of the constructive feedback should give clear feedback to the the newer nurse on how their future work can be improved (Grainger, 2022).
